Save the date for a visit by the award-winning author Randall Horton, Wednesday, November 2nd-3rd, hosted by the College of Liberal Arts and co-sponsored by the Center for Engaged Storycraft, RIT's College of Art and Design, School of Individualized Study, and School of Performing Arts.
Horton's visit, as part of the Viehe Lecture Series, will include a public talk and reading from his forthcoming memoir, Dead Weight, in Fireside Lounge, 4-5:45 p.m. In these essays and his talk, Horton recounts his journey from state prison in Maryland to a PhD program in creative writing to his current post as a tenured professor of English and as an award-winning poet and writer. The memoir grapples with the effects of racism on the psyche and lived experience of black men and boys in the U.S. and the lasting weight of incarceration on those who intend to change their life for the better.
Horton's award-winning Hook: A Memoir, published in 2017, and, in particular, his {#289-128}: Poems, a collection titled after his corrections number as a prisoner of the state of Maryland that received the American Book Award in 2021, are riveting, unblinking encounters with the racialized systems of power, incarceration, and the humanity they can neither suppress nor abide.
The following evening, Thursday, November 3, 2022, Randall Horton and the group Radical Reversal will have a performance at the Theatre at Innovation Square, at 131 Chestnut Street in Rochester, NY. Radical Reversal is a project that provides performance space, recording studios, and digital editing tools to allow incarcerated people to create poetry and music, chaneling their humanity through these creative processes, cultivating their work together, and performing livestream.
